I’d like to introduce you to a district with a unique atmosphere in Strasbourg: the Neustadt. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands out for its history, preserved heritage, green spaces and cultural offerings.

Every street corner in the Neustadt district has buildings to admire. Built in freestone or Vosges sandstone, these Haussmann-style buildings often feature wrought-iron balconies in the art deco style, and small gardens opening directly onto the street.

I love its wide avenues and architectural curiosities such as the Villa Knopf, the Egyptian House and the Villa Brion. We owe this particular style, a clever blend of Art Nouveau, Jugendstil and neo-Renaissance, to our German neighbors. In 1880, the Germans considerably enlarged the city of Strasbourg. These include the Avenue des Vosges, the Tribunal district, Les Contades, the Forêt-Noire district and the Observatoire.

Spaces of greenery

The best place to admire the splendor of its architecture? The Place de la République, with its central park adorned with majestic gingko biloba and magnolia trees. All around are imposing buildings, including the Théâtre National de Strasbourg (TNS) and the Bibliothèque Nationale Universitaire. Students, employees, retirees… all local residents gather here in fine weather for lunch, a book or a chat.

Another little haven of peace is just a 5-minute walk from the Place de la République: the Parc du Contades. A great place for strolling, it features children’s playgrounds and a number of sports fields. It also boasts a magnificent bandstand where jazz concerts are regularly held.

Not far from the Gallia tram station, you can stroll along the Ill river. Its landscaped banks, adorned with weeping willows, are an enchanting backdrop. Or do what any good Strasbourger would do: sit by the water and let your mind wander.

Finally, I couldn’t mention these green oases without mentioning the botanical gardens. Its 6,000 species of plants and trees

The botanical garden is a unique place in Strasbourg. Calm and relaxing, the botanical garden will make you feel as if you’ve left the European capital behind.

Culture and relaxation

The district is also home to numerous cultural venues, including the Théâtre National de Strasbourg (TNS) – the only national theater outside Paris – the Palais des Fêtes and the Musée Tomi Ungerer. You’ll also come across an impressive number of students, thanks to the many nearby faculties. In fact, I can’t recommend enough a visit to the Palais Universitaire or the Observatoire Astronomique, both of which have striking atmospheres!

Finally, I couldn’t fail to mention the Bains Municipaux. Dedicated to health care, sport and well-being, the Bains Municipaux is a listed building! It’s not just for its Roman baths, hammams, saunas and outdoor pool, but also for its unique, skilfully preserved Jugendstil-inspired décor. The recently renovated facility now offers a plethora of sporting activities, from yoga to aqua-training to gentle gymnastics. Its little plus? A wide range of wellness massages and foot reflexology.

A place for every taste

If you know me at all, you know how much I love a good meal. And the Neustadt district offers them in abundance! There’s something for every taste and every occasion… A business lunch? Go to Café Brant. In the mood for oysters? Head to the Hôtel des Postes restaurant “Chère Amie”. Coffee with friends? Push open the door of the brasserie “Le Michel Café”cold “Snack’Mich”! And in fine weather, all these addresses offer terraces that invite you to take your time.

As you can see, I’ve fallen in love with this district, which combines a vibrant cultural life, green spaces and architectural splendor. Why not make it your new home?
