Nestled in a peaceful green setting in the heart of Strasbourg’s famous Orangerie Park, the gourmet restaurant “Le Buerehiesel” is an institution for all Alsatians. I invite you to discover its generous and authentic cuisine, which pays homage to the art of French cooking.

Somewhat hidden by the many trees and groves that make up the Parc de l’Orangerie, the gourmet restaurant “Le Buerehiesel” enjoys an exceptional setting. Completely surrounded by greenery, the establishment offers a calm and relaxing atmosphere, which adds to the culinary experience. In summer, I like to sit on their terrace overlooking the Parc de l’Orangerie. As the chef and manager of Le Buerehiesel so aptly puts it, it feels like you’re in the middle of nature, even though you’re opposite the European institutions and only 10 minutes from Place Kléber! To get there, simply walk up the main path leading to the Pavillon Joséphine. But for those who wish to drive there, no worries: the establishment has 12 private parking spaces.

The farmers’ cottage

Surprisingly, the Buerehiesel building was originally constructed in 1607 in Molsheim, before being dismantled and relocated to the Parc de l’Orangerie for the 1895 International Industrial Exhibition. “At the time, they wanted to show what a typical Alsatian farmhouse looked like, hence its name ‘Buerehiesel,’ which literally means ‘farmhouse’ in Alsatian dialect!” Eric Westermann informs me. And what had until then been a bistro for tourists was transformed into a gourmet restaurant in 1970, following the purchase of the business by Viviane and Antoine Westermann. “My parents fell in love with the place and wanted to write a new chapter in its history,” explains the chef. Over time, the establishment gained prestige and even earned three Michelin stars in 1994. Eric continues the family business today, offering several iconic dishes created by his father on the menu.

Signature dishes

Eric Westermann offers cuisine that focuses on the ingredients! “I don’t try to put too many components on the plate; you should be able to understand what you’re eating,” the chef tells me. Generous and delicious, his dishes are primarily classic French, although they sometimes incorporate Eastern and Asian influences. The restaurant’s signature dishes? Those created by Eric’s father, Antoine Westermann! Among them are the unmissable fresh frog legs pan-fried with chervil, accompanied by Schniederspaetle with Isigny cream. “They are still in high demand!” the chef tells me. My favorite? His shredded crab with lime, quinoa, and crunchy vegetables, served with a delicate citrus shellfish jelly. Fresh, salty, visually appealing, and delicious: I highly recommend it! Finally, when it comes to desserts, don’t hesitate to indulge in the chef’s soufflés or his famous caramelized beer brioche, with Perle beer ice cream and beer-roasted pear—a real treat.

Un moment d’intimité

A tip: take advantage of their €55 business lunch menu! For me, it’s a great introduction to Eric Westermann’s cuisine. This menu attracts many professionals, such as European officials and members of neighboring consulates. “We also welcome seniors, who sometimes travel a bit to have lunch at our restaurant,” the chef explains. But if you’re under 35, the young people’s menu at Les Étoiles d’Alsace is definitely worth trying. “It allows a younger audience to discover our dishes at very attractive prices. It’s a way for us to attract and retain new customers,” Eric Westermann informs me. Personally, I prefer to go there in the evening with friends. It is even possible to reserve one of their lounges, allowing you to combine privacy with a gourmet meal. Three lounges that can accommodate between 15 and 55 people are available for private hire. For me, Le Buerehiesel is a place that makes you want to spend time at the table with your loved ones, enjoying the moment while savoring exceptional dishes, all in a unique, green setting.
