Restaurant La Cocotte – a stew of flavors

North of Strasbourg, in the heart of the Robertsau district, you’ll find an atypical restaurant full of charm: La Cocotte! You’re sure to fall under the spell of its vintage decor, intimate summer terrace and, of course, its balanced, inventive cuisine.

Cagettes, huge jam jars, sewing machines, a helicon… the decor of Strasbourg’s “La Cocotte” restaurant can be surprising! All these objects, collected over time – or brought back by friends and customers – contribute to the unique and original atmosphere of the establishment. This vintage feel is also evident in the kitchen, where the vast majority of dishes are cooked and served in small cast-iron casseroles. At first, you may be a little surprised to see these charming little casseroles on your plate, but from the very first bite, you’ll see the benefits! They’re ideal for simmering, long cooking and keeping the heat in. Cocottes are the hallmark of the restaurant, from which it takes its name.

The right balance of flavors

Always on the lookout for new flavors and surprising combinations, Julia Noth, the restaurant’s chef and co-manager, is a creative soul. But make no mistake, her cuisine is no less family-friendly and accessible. She also makes a point of accompanying most of her dishes with fresh, quality, seasonal vegetables. You’ll love her picon-braised veal chuck, accompanied by pan-fried foie gras escalope and mushroom tombée. Another highlight is his cocotte of veal kidneys flambéed in Armagnac, garnished with potato gnocchi and mushrooms. Personally, I love his fish filet simmered in a light coconut milk curry, with wheat noodles and vegetable tagliatelle. Cooked in its famous casseroles, the fish has time to absorb all the flavors, and retains its creaminess. Don’t hesitate to accompany your dishes with one of the wines from their selection. Mostly natural and biodynamic, they’re sure to enhance your dish.

The return of homemade

As for desserts, Julia delights us with her homemade chocolate mousse with honey crunch and salted butter caramel ice cream. And what about her seasonal fruit pavlova, tiramisu or hot chocolate profiteroles? I’m salivating in anticipation. The menu also includes meringues glacée chantilly and a crème brûlée, also in season, which are well worth the detour! Last but not least, all the desserts on the menu are entirely homemade, except for the ice creams, which are made by a master ice cream maker. Homemade food is a constant feature of the chef’s work, and she never considers any other way of preparing her dishes. For example, you won’t find out in advance the name of the fish cooked each Friday – it all depends on what arrives!

Hidden terrace

Located in the north of Strasbourg, in the middle of the very commercial Boecklin alley, the restaurant “La Cocotte” has many regulars, the vast majority of whom live in the Robertsau district. But the establishment also attracts many working people from nearby European and banking institutions. Located just 5 minutes’ walk from the Boecklin streetcar stop, “La Cocotte” is the ideal place for a business lunch or lunch with colleagues! On the menu for the past few weeks? Duck fillet with blueberries and market vegetables, Thai-style beef stir-fry or lamb stew with mild spices: what a mouth-watering promise! In the evening, by candlelight, the restaurant offers a more intimate and cozy atmosphere. I particularly appreciate its hidden terrace at the rear of the establishment. Sheltered from view, it invites you to take your time and enjoy your starter, main course and dessert in complete tranquillity. Isn’t this the very definition of French savoir-vivre?
