It is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in the Alsatian capital! Located northeast of Grande-Île, the Orangerie – Conseil des XV neighborhood is home to the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, consulates, embassies, and the famous Parc de l’Orangerie, from which it takes its name. Quiet, residential, and family-friendly, many people seek to settle here!
I admit it: the Orangerie – Conseil des XV is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Strasbourg. This residential area consists mainly of mansions with gardens and large buildings inspired by the Art Nouveau style. With spacious rooms, high ceilings, moldings, and old parquet flooring, its homes combine old-world charm with high-end amenities. The neighborhood also has a few more modern complexes, if that’s what you prefer. Many European officials, embassy and consulate staff, and senior executives have made their homes here. This very quiet neighborhood naturally attracts families looking for space.
Parc de l’Orangerie
And when it comes to open spaces, you’ll be spoiled for choice! Central Park is to New York what the Parc de l’Orangerie is to Strasbourg: a magnificent green lung where families with young children, Sunday sports enthusiasts, active locals, lovers, and seniors all come together. This park, which covers 26 hectares, offers a wide variety of spaces. There are wooden playgrounds for children, sports facilities, English-style landscaped gardens, a rose garden, French-style walks, a pink sandstone fountain, a wooden bandstand, and more. At its heart is the majestic Pavillon Joséphine, which originally housed orange trees, hence the park’s name. And when the weather is nice, don’t hesitate to take part in tai chi, Nordic walking, stretching, Pilates, and yoga classes on the lawns of the Parc de l’Orangerie! Finally, if you’re feeling romantic, you can rent a boat to sail on the artificial lake… Charming in all seasons, the Parc de l’Orangerie is undoubtedly the meeting place for all Strasbourg residents, and especially those who live in the neighborhood.
An international education
Parents also appreciate the Orangerie – Conseil des XV neighborhood for its educational offerings. The Robert Schuman International Preschool offers English, Spanish, and Italian international sections. The German section is located at the Vauban Preschool. The Robert Schuman International Elementary School allows children to continue their international education in the same neighborhood thanks to its English, Polish, Italian, Spanish, and German sections. And for middle and high school, the neighborhood is once again very well equipped with the Institution Sainte Clotilde, the Collège Notre-Dame de Sion, and the Collège International Vauban. As you can see, everything has been done to attract families to this side of town!
Petits délices discrets
Another highlight of the neighborhood: you won’t find any noisy bars or nightclubs here, but rather small cafés, tea rooms, and other restaurants with a cozy atmosphere. I particularly like to sit on the terrace at Elodie & Jimmy’s to enjoy their famous lemon and basil tart! When it comes to restaurants, the neighborhood is full of great places to eat, such as the unmissable Buerehiesel in the heart of the Parc de l’Orangerie, the original de:ja, and the more discreet, Michelin-starred Les Funambules. And if you feel like strolling through the Parc de l’Orangerie with an ice cream in your hand, head to the city’s historic artisan ice cream maker: La Maison Franchi. Between the classic salted butter caramel, amarena cherry, and hazelnut flavors and the more original violet, mandarin, and green apple flavors, one thing is certain: you’ll be hooked! But I’m also certain that you’ll quickly fall in love with this neighborhood. Welcoming, green, calm, and relaxing, it offers everything a family could dream of.
