Obernai, the Art of Living According

Its medieval city center, traditional half-timbered houses, bucolic setting, as well as its numerous restaurants and boutiques, make Obernai a highly sought-after place to live. Moving here means embracing an entire art of living. Let’s discover it together.

Just 25 kilometers from Strasbourg, Obernai is the ideal destination for those who want both the city in the countryside and the countryside in the city. Let me set the scene: vineyards, orchards, hills, and plains surround the fortified town of Obernai. Residents often stroll along the Ehn River, take a breath of fresh air in the Obernai – Bernardswiller forest, or relax in the tree-filled park of the Domaine de la Léonardsau.

Nestled at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile, this town serves as the gateway to countless hikes and walking trails. Families also enjoy its many playgrounds, such as those found in the Jardin du Selhof or the heart of Parc des Roselières. But the town itself is also worth exploring! Its steep, cobbled streets, traditional half-timbered houses, and imposing belfry make it an architectural gem.

Obernai, the Gastronomic Delight

When it comes to restaurants, Obernai has nothing to envy of its big sister, Strasbourg! You will find Michelin-starred establishments such as La Fourchette des Ducs or Thierry Schwarz. Fine dining spots like À l’Agneau d’Or and Le Parc are also must-visits. And if you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, head to La Cour de Mémé! Personally, my favorite remains the Winstub Le Freiberg. I love its warm, authentic family ambiance and the beautifully executed dishes. In the kitchen, Sacha has a gift for elevating traditional Alsatian cuisine.

Obernai, the Flavorful Experience

For a drink with friends, I recommend stepping into the wine bar Qui Dit Vin?. While it boasts a strong selection of local Alsatian wines, its menu also features wines from other French regions such as the Southwest, Languedoc, and the Rhône Valley. Beer lovers, on the other hand, should head just one street over to Les Intenables! This venue, with an atmosphere somewhere between an Irish pub and a rock bar, offers 14 craft beers on tap. These brews are entirely crafted by the brewery of the same name, located in the neighboring village of Rosheim. Lastly, for those who prefer coffee and a sweet treat, Cup & Go! is the perfect spot. Nestled at the end of an alleyway, this coffee shop is a cozy retreat for relaxing, chatting, reading, or even daydreaming. And for those with gluten intolerance or allergies, the tearoom L’Eden will be your happy place.

Obernai, the Mysterious

This medieval city also stands out for having Europe’s top-rated spa: Yoganugi at the Hôtel du Parc. Inspired by Japan’s Ryūkyū archipelago, this 3,000 m² spa offers a one-of-a-kind sensory journey. Hammams, saunas, a salt cave, relaxation areas, massages… everything here is designed for well-being. But Yoganugi goes beyond relaxation, immersing guests in a mysterious aquatic world. Noisy, soothing, energizing, mystical, stimulating… its labyrinthine water circuit consists of ten unique spaces. My advice: let yourself be carried away by the experience—you’ll never see spas the same way again.

Lastly, I couldn’t talk about Obernai without mentioning its many charming boutiques that bring its city center to life. While you’ll find well-known brands, there are also independent shops such as Intim’idée, Temps Présent, Contes de Fées, L et Lui, Nuit Étoilée, and more. You’re bound to discover lovely little treasures to enhance your home and wardrobe! Innovative wellness spaces, independent shopping, a variety of bars and restaurants, nature at your doorstep—this is the art of living in Obernai!

The only question left is: when will you come and settle here?
